Creating a photo essay that captures the stunning views from airplane windows presents an artistic ethical challenge, when considering the ecological implications of air travel. As a photographer and artist, it's essential to navigate the tension between celebrating the beauty of our planet from above and acknowledging the significant environmental consequences of aviation.

Air travel is a major contributor to climate change, accounting for approximately 2.5% of global CO₂ emissions, but its total impact on global warming is estimated to be around 4% due to non-CO₂ effects like nitrogen oxides (NOx) and contrails. These emissions not only contribute to greenhouse gas concentrations but also have complex interactions in the atmosphere that can exacerbate warming effects. For instance, studies indicate that non-CO₂ emissions from aircraft are responsible for about two-thirds of aviation's climate impact, highlighting the urgency for awareness and action. Furthermore, as an artist living on a small island like Mauritius, the implications of frequent flying are particularly poignant. The island's delicate ecosystems are vulnerable to the broader impacts of climate change, which can be exacerbated by increased air travel. The challenge lies in balancing the desire to explore and document the world with the responsibility to protect it.

I am obviously grateful for the opportunities to travel and capture the world’s beauty from unique perspectives. Each flight offers a chance to witness breathtaking landscapes and diverse cultures, enriching my artistic vision and expanding my understanding of our planet. However, this privilege comes with a profound sense of ambiguity. While I cherish the moments spent soaring above the clouds, I am also acutely aware of the environmental costs associated with air travel. This contrast creates a tension that I cannot ignore, compelling me to reflect on how I can honor both my passion for photography and my responsibility to protect the fragile ecosystems that inspire my work.

Through "Wings," I aim not only to showcase the beauty visible from airplane windows but also to engage viewers in a dialogue about the environmental costs of air travel. By recognizing the complexities of our choices as artists and travelers, we can inspire a more sustainable approach to exploring our world—one that honors both its beauty and its fragility. Balancing gratitude with awareness is essential as I navigate this complex relationship with travel in my artistic journey.
